Implementing Ecodesign During Product Development: An Ex-Ante Life Cycle Assessment of Wood-Plastic Composites

Abstract About 80% of environmental performance is determined during product development. This study assesses impacts wood-plastic composite (WPC) boards still in development, to identify impact hot spots and improvement potentials. A seven-step approach ecodesign implementation was used. It identifies derives strategies. life cycle assessment (LCA) according ISO 14040 conducted quantify potential impacts. The WPC are made PVC wood flour. Impacts mostly result from electricity consumption for production. Thus, this proposes replacing with polylactic acid (PLA). Further strategies increasing material efficiency, energy renewable use secondary plastic input. Increased end recycling reduces impacts, compared incineration only. These changes reduce the initial climate change results 145 kg CO 2 eq by 55%. early consideration aspects supports sustainable
